The composer was inspired by historical data, but also by stories, anecdotes, myths, and legends surrounding this figure. The themes within the composition are strongly intertwined, while the music – from heroic motifs to melancholy in the elegies – remains consistently varied and engaging. Impressive tutti passages are interspersed with more open-sounding fragments in which various players can shine as soloists.
