Get the sound straight from the source. Take advantage of the onboard controls to ensure you spend more time mixing and less time fixing! The handy 6dB pad is perfect for reducing the sensitivity of the capsule to minimize the risk of clipping and distortion. Additionally, the two-position roll off switch allows you to reduce clutter and proximity effect, so your recording is less disruptive. Thanks to the zero off-axis coloration, recordings with this microphone sound incredibly natural. Translating sounds from the room to the speaker has never been easier than with the U89 i.

Selectable polar patterns

The Neumann U 89 i microphone features five different directional polar patterns for a truly flexible performance. The available polar patterns are omnidirectional, cardioid, figure-8, hypercardioid and wide-angle cardioid.

Cardioid is excellent for delivering a tightly focused sound, while offering excellent off-axis rejection of around -6dB of unwanted noise and ambience. This is a great polar pattern to rely on when recording live performances, either on stage or in the studio. Hypercardioid and wide-angle cardioid are virtually the same, but offer different angles of repulsion.

Fig. 8 records sound from the front and back of the capsule, while rejecting any sound coming from the side. This pattern has been a go-to trick for many producers recording two backing vocals. When paired with another fig.8 microphone and carefully positioned, it can also work wonders at simultaneously recording a single artist's vocals and guitar. But be careful. Using this placement increases the proximity effect, which can lead to an unnatural amount of low-end reproduction from the microphone. There is a good reason why many radio stations choose this pattern!

If you want to make natural recordings, it doesn't get much better than omni. Omnidirectional means that the sound is picked up by the capsule within a 360 degree radius. Choosing this pattern allows you to view the sources up close without risking a proximity effect. This is a favorite pattern for many Grammy award winning engineers and producers when recording multiple string and brass instruments. It can also make the "Levee Break" when heavily compressed and used for drum room microphones!
