The Koch Classictone SE 12 is designed for the more discerning guitarist who loves a straightforward "all about the sound" approach to guitar amplification. The Classic SE features a single-ended 100% Class A all-tube amplifier. The goal was to use as few components as possible to create an amplifier that is very dynamic, responding perfectly to a guitarist's playing style and type of guitar, while allowing the tubes to color the sound naturally.
The beauty of the single-ended design of the Classictone SE 12 is that players can experiment with different tube types to get more different sounds out of the amp through different tube types in the power amplifier. For example, if you use the 5881 tube, the amplifier will deliver the (tube) sound as it should be. The sound ranges from warm, almost "piano-like" bass to crystal clear highs. When you turn up the volume, you get a fat but articulate natural tube overdrive. On the other hand, with the EL34 Tube, you get a tight but controlled low-end with smooth mids and a silky top-end. If you increase the gain, you get a singing sustain with a modest compression.
The built-in auto-bias circuit allows you to swap out different types of tubes without having to re-tension the amplifier. With the Classictone SE 12, you can create new sounds over and over again by using the single tone knob in combination with the three voicing switches (Mid-Boost, Bass-Cut &; Gain-Boost) and with the Gain and Volume knobs. The mid boost adds definition, and the bass cut keeps the bass tight at higher distortion levels. By cranking up the gain and adding gain boost, you can create a more saturated sound that gets richer the more you turn up the volume knob. Since most guitarists love to record their own inspiring soundscapes, we've added a recording output with built-in speaker simulation to get the best direct recording results.
The speaker's power button allows you to turn off the speaker for silent recording while sending power to an internal dummy load. For added flexibility, the Classictone SE is equipped with a line input for connecting an external preamplifier such as .dem Koch Pedaltone II.
Last but not least, you can use the Classictone SE 12 in two power modes. The standby switch has three positions: Standby, Full Power and Low Power Consumption. In low-power mode, the amplifier delivers only a third of its rated output power (full-power mode), so you can create a complete natural power amplifier distortion at lower volumes.
