The Last Friend of Napoleon is based on a true piece of Dutch history. When Napoleon was defeated in October 1813 after his failed Russian campaign, the French withdrew from the Netherlands. By early 1814, the entire country was liberated, except for Delfzijl, which was still occupied by French troops. This programmatic work is about political and military stubbornness, about chasing dreams, and about love, which always finds its own inimitable way. This work by Dirk Brossé, one of the most renowned contemporary composers, tells a dramatic story through a full symphonic wind orchestra – in which brass, a range of percussion and, above all, much beautiful melodic material play the leading role.
