A tribute to the trailblazers – the pioneers – in the world of wind music in the Low Countries: the original founders of the orchestras and those who constantly take the lead in the behind-the-scenes organisation of associations and federations. These volunteers dedicate themselves wholeheartedly. Sometimes they are also the linchpins of families active in these associations. Jacob de Haan composed Pioneers of the Lowlands in memory of one of them, commissioned by their family. The march is characterised by a powerful syncopated melody in a minor key, followed by a distinctly lyrical trio in a major key.
