Contemplation is the first movement of Jan Van der Roost's Clarinet Concerto. It was commissioned by Musica Reservata VOF (B) and is dedicated to Eddy Vanoosthuyse. A somewhat mysterious intro leads via ascending melodies to a first orchestral climax, after which the soloist makes their entrance, first with mostly fragmentary musical material, then with longer melodic lines. The orchestra engages in a musical dialogue with the soloist and creates an appropriate framework through delicate and colourful instrumentation. Towards the end, the initial atmosphere is revisited, and the soloist ends completely alone with the same note with which they began. The concerto is also available as a piano reduction.
