I Shall Love But Thee is, in the literal sense of the word, a work for a special occasion, as it was originally written for the marriage of the composer's youngest son. The lyrics are by William Shakespeare: Jan Van der Roost was inspired by them to create compelling and appealing music, which stylistically is reminiscent of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and George Frideric Handel (in the second part), two composers who set Shakespeare's texts to music – even though no literal quotes were used. The rather rare combination of soprano and wind orchestra makes this work a unique addition to the repertoire!
