'Martenizza' is the Bulgarian word for March. This work describes an ancient Bulgarian custom, which the composer learned about through Ivo Stoykov, a Bulgarian acquaintance. According to tradition, on March 1st, good friends give each other a number of white and red pennants. When a stork is seen for the first time in March, the pennants are hung on a tree branch, and a wish may be made. Through this custom, friends wish each other much happiness and health.
