The 517 brings the award-winning Portico 5017 Mobile Pre to the 500-series format: a transformer-coupled mic pre, DI, and compressor with Vari-phase, Silk, and blend capabilities in one module.
The mic pre, based on the TEC Award-winning Portico 5017, delivers up to 66dB gain, with polarity inversion, phantom power, and the Silk circuit for added vintage character. The separate instrument amplifier offers 30dB gain, ground lift, and variable phase. As a single-channel instrument channel, the 517 combines direct and amplified signals: the DI captures the direct instrument signal, the mic pre the speaker cabinet signal. The blend control mixes both signals as desired, while the vari-phase prevents or enhances phase cancellation between them. For compression of the blended signal, the internal compressor jumper is set to the blend path by default.
The opto-coupler compressor, built around a new LDR design, is reduced to a single threshold control with automatic make-up gain, fixed 2:1 ratio, and fixed attack/release: simply reduce the threshold until the desired compression is achieved, with an LED indicating active compression. In addition to standard polarity inversion, the vari-phase also controls incremental phase adjustment, ideal when combining signals from the same source, such as close-mic and overheads on drums, or direct and mic'd signals on bass or guitar, allowing the best mic position to be chosen without regard for phase relationships.

- Vari-phase: incrementally rotates the phase for alignment of signals from the same source, especially when blending direct and mic'd instrument signals at similar levels
Compressor
- Type: opto-coupler compressor based on a new LDR design
- Operation: single threshold control with automatic make-up gain
- Ratio: fixed at 2:1, fixed attack and release
- Setup: reduce threshold until desired compression is achieved; LED indicates active compression
