Thijs Krammer: Sight-Singing
In recent years, I have taught at various conservatories to both singers and conductors, from classical and light music backgrounds. I am often surprised that so many singers and conductors are poor at sight-reading. The reason for this – in my opinion – is that they always sing note by note. They do not sufficiently relate the notes to the key in which they are singing.
A method in which the singer does learn to relate the notes to the key is solmization. In this method, the notes are given the names do-re-mi, and so on. This method has great advantages. After sufficient practice, the singer is able to hit every note of the scale, regardless of which note was sung before.
Solmization is not used in all solfège books. Perhaps this is because solmization seems a bit old-fashioned. That is why I have written a book in which solmization has been given a new look. The notes of the scale are simply given the numbers 1 to 7. These numbers are easier to remember than the names do-re-mi, and the numbers are easier to connect with chord degrees and intervals.
