This symphonic poem is based on three motives: a dynamic, propulsive allegro representing the zest for life and cheerfulness of the inhabitants of the German town of Endingen (who commissioned this composition), a broad, lyrical motive depicting the peace and vastness of nature in the Black Forest, and an extensive passage with many outbursts, evoking the volcano that gave this wine region its fertile soil. A grand, festive finale ultimately brings the work to its conclusion.
