The beautiful chorale theme Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From Deep Distress I Cry to You) can be traced back to Martin Luther and is based on the text of Psalm 130. The chorale only became widely known through the eponymous chorale cantata. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote this exactly two hundred years later, in 1724. For this arrangement, it was primarily Bach who inspired Jacob de Haan. With this, he made an excellent addition to the repertoire for sacred music.
