Who doesn't get butterflies in their stomach now and then? Butterfly Overture incorporates a beautiful love theme - as well as a theme representing the butterfly as a fluttering creature. By stacking the melodic foundations of both themes, two basic chords are created which, together with a diatonically descending bass line, ensure a powerful opening. This is followed by a Misterioso, where various basic chords are stacked in the accompaniment, creating the suggestion of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. After the fast and slow sections follows a short reprise of the fast section, in which both themes sound simultaneously. The work ends with the powerful chords and rhythm of the beginning.
