The work opens with Theme A, composed in the Phrygian mode, which, after a climax, transitions into a fast section. This Theme B is notable for its wide interval leaps. This is followed by a development section in which the two main themes reappear both separately and simultaneously. The work then settles into a slow middle section based on Theme B. The movement concludes with a tutti-played Theme B that is brutally interrupted by fragments of Theme A, while Theme B (from the slow middle section) returns in its entirety once more. Before the work concludes in a radiant fortissimo, a special effect is created by the trumpet soloist playing Theme A from the back of the hall.
