Chorale Variations consists of six variations on an original chorale-like theme. The work was commissioned by the Opsterland Cultural Activities Foundation and is dedicated to its chairman and founder Germ Nicolaï, in gratitude for his many years of dedication to the wind music movement in the province of Friesland. Nicolaï was, among other things, manager of De Spijkerpakkenband and De Friese Jeugd Brassband. He was also the initiator of the successful Gouden Spiker Festival, an annual multi-day event for wind bands from the lower divisions. In 2015, Chorale Variations is the set work at this festival.
