The inspiration for this work was the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Russia, which occurred on April 26, 1986. In the first part, Ostinato, despair, powerlessness, fear, and anger are expressed. These themes are further developed in the fast second part, Fantasia. Contrastes was the compulsory work for the third division of the Dutch Brass Band Championships in 1986. In 1989, this composition was the compulsory work for the final round of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
