Jan de Haan: Hermitage (Concert Band)|Concertante Variations on an original theme after Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyJan de Haan was inspired to create this work by five paintings from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, one of the largest and most diverse museums in the world. He used the melodic Andante cantabile from the string quartet opus 11 by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as a starting point. In doing so, he created his own musical depiction that is as varied as the paintings on which it is based – from Dirck Hals' Merry Company in an Inn to Henri Matisse's The Dance II. A true masterpiece!
