For Jan de Haan, the FIFA World Cup was a source of inspiration when writing this work. As is usual with major sporting events, the game is played for victory – hence the title 'Victory'. For weeks, football fans worldwide are glued to their screens, not wanting to miss any of the spectacle. Neighbouring countries, usually living in friendship, become almost enemies the moment they play against each other. Nevertheless, this is a work with a non-programmatic structure. After the introduction, in which the intervals of a fourth and a fifth are remarkably present, a march-like section follows, interrupted by a subdued middle section. The lyrical main theme, played by the alto saxophone, shows a strong resemblance to the introduction.
