Glorioso was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Japanese Siena Wind Orchestra. After a short aleatoric introduction, the work opens with an energetic ‘one-note fanfare’, mainly featuring the brass. The note F, omnipresent as a pedal tone, continues to resonate into the following slow section. A noble theme is followed by the spectacular and virtuosic finale, which builds on musical components heard earlier in the piece. Stylistically, the influence of Dmitri Shostakovich is unmistakably present in this dazzling finale, with the main motif transformed into C D Eb B (or Cb): the anagram the Russian master often used as a musical signature. A glorious conclusion to a special work that showcases various facets of the modern wind orchestra.
