Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetls’ (villages) and ghettos of Eastern Europe, where wandering Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, performed at celebrations – especially weddings – since the early Middle Ages. For A Klezmer Karnival, three traditional melodies have been used: Choson kale mazel tov (a wedding dance), Freylekh (a Jewish circle dance) and Sherele (a shepherd’s dance).
