Quakernack: Transylvania (Accordion Ensemble)
Transylvania is the old name for the current region of Transylvania in Romania. Transylvania is the title of this suite with four Balkan dances, famous for their spirited music and variable rhythms. The work begins with a Vranje, a dance in 9/8 time, named after a city in northeastern Siberia. This is followed by the Macedonian folk song Aide Jano. A dance with a very refined, melancholic melody, which is constantly repeated in a slightly altered form. This dance maintains its calm through a steady, flowing 7/8 time signature. The third dance is a Biserka, a rhythmic and slightly swinging Serbian dance in a moderate 3/4 time. Finally, the dance Transylvanian Joe, a romantic dance from Transylvania. This dance starts slowly but increases in tempo and dynamics to finally culminate in a loud, powerful, and virtuosic finale.
