Rameau: Savages

Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 - 1764) is primarily known today as a music theorist. Yet he was also a remarkable composer. He became fascinated by two American Indians from Louisiana, whom he met in Paris. Following this encounter, he wrote the harpsichord piece Les Sauvages (the savages). He later incorporated this work into his opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes as Dance of the Great Peace Pipe. This well-executed arrangement honors the spirit of the original but approaches it from a new angle.
