The Portico II Master Buss Processor combines the high-voltage, discrete Class-A signal paths of the 5088 Mixer with a compressor, limiter, and stereo field editor into one stereo processing tool that pushes the boundaries of traditional 2-channel compression.
Originally developed for mastering, the MBP has since become equally beloved by mix, tracking, and FOH engineers—from bass-heavy EDM to the subtle mastering of a chamber orchestra. The input and output transformers were designed by Rupert Neve himself; the 72V topology ensures seamless integration into virtually any system. Mastering-grade detented potentiometers control the dynamics, tone, and stereo field settings. This new topology represents a significant evolution of Neve's classic designs, with noticeable gains in headroom, dynamic range, noise, distortion, slew rate, and bandwidth—without sacrificing the warm, musical signature.
The two compressor sections operate dual mono or stereo, with control over ratio, threshold, attack, release, blend, side-chain HPF, limit, and make-up gain. The compressor switches between feed-forward (transparent, modern response) and feed-back (smoother, vintage response). Peak mode makes the compressor react to peak transients with a reaction time of approximately 0.1ms; when off, the compressor operates on the RMS signal in conjunction with attack and release. The SC HPF places a 125Hz high-pass filter in the sidechain to prevent heavy low frequencies from affecting the VCA response. Blend mixes the compressed signal in parallel with the dry signal—ideal for lifting softer elements (such as subtle snare brushes next to hard hits) without losing the dynamics of the louder elements.
The limiter operates with a single control, but is far from simple: Adaptive Release Technology combines multiple release time constants, allowing the limiter to react quickly to transients (like the "snap" of a snare) and more slowly to more consistent signals (like a bass guitar). This allows for more aggressive limiting than usual, without losing the character of the music and without the modulation distortion of fast limiters. The limiter shares the same discrete Class-A gain module and VCA with the compressor, ensuring no additional signal stages are added.
The stereo field editor (SFE) takes M-S techniques to the next level with width, depth, and associated bandpass filters. The width control expands or reduces the stereo image (wide/mono) and controls the amount of ambience; towards wide, the difference signal is amplified for more spaciousness and more pronounced reverbs, towards mono, the image is narrowed and coherent mono content is enhanced. The depth control positions elements in the soundstage—a centrally placed instrument or vocal can be brought forward, or almost made inaudible without affecting the rest of the mix. Separate filters determine which frequencies are affected by the width and depth circuits, for targeted control per bandwidth. With SFE TO COMP, the Mid and Side signals are routed to the two compressors, for full M-S operation instead of standard L-R.
The Silk & Texture circuit controls the amount and type of harmonic content in the output stage, from completely transparent to thick and weighty—with more sonic color than Neve's vintage modules, divided into two characters. SILK RED enhances harmonics from the high and high-mid frequencies for extra sparkle, suitable for vocals, snare, strings, piano, and other acoustic sources. SILK BLUE enhances harmonics from the low and low-mid frequencies for more "body," ideal for drums, bass, heavy electric guitars, male vocals, and synths.

- Compression
- For signals below the set “threshold” level, a compressor provides a linear path allowing signals to be amplified without any gain adjustment. When signals exceed the “threshold” level, the gain is reduced in a controlled manner, depending on the set Ratio.
- Gain
- The GAIN range is from 0dB to +20 dB. When compression has occurred, the gain control is necessary to increase the overall gain to restore the program level.
- Limiter
- Musically transparent brick-wall limiting engaged when the signal reaches the limiter threshold. The attack time is .03 mS to reduce the first half of a 20 kHz waveform above the threshold, with Serial Adaptive Release.
- Bypass All
- Hardwire bypass for MBP, including the input and output transformers
- Texture
- Continuously variable control for Silk and Silk+ modes allows the engineer to fine-tune the harmonic ratio and tonality of each channel
- FF/FB
- Changes the VCA detection from a forward feed design (fast, more accurate attack & release) to a feedback design (smoother, more musical response)
- Peak / RMS Compression Selection
- When engaged, the MBP compressor uses a combination of peak and RMS (average) detection to engage the VCA set to under 1ms. When disengaged, it only follows RMS.
- SC HPF
- Introduces a 125Hz HPF to the VCA side chain signal. This allows the compressor to ignore sustained low-frequency content.
- Ratio
- Range from 1:1 to LIMIT (i.e., 40:1)
- Threshold
- Range from -30dBu to +20dBU
- Attack Time
- Range from 20 mS to 75 mS.
- Release / Recovery Time
- RELEASE time range is 100 mS to 2.5 seconds.
- Stereo Operation
- When the LINK switch is engaged, channel A becomes the master control, and any gain reduction occurs simultaneously in both channels
- LED Meters
- Four Peak LED METERS are provided showing the stereo output levels and gain reduction.
- The output level meter covers the range of -10 to +22 dBu and above is considered overload.
- The reduction is calibrated in dB and covers the range of 1 to 22 dBu, read from top to bottom
- Side Chain Send/Return
- External compressor side chain send and return on 2 x TRS jacks. The send is always active and normalized to the return (NOTE: If the send and return are connected to a patchbay, the send should be normalized or standard to the return, as the compressor will not trigger if the return has no signal)
