Frontier Vision by American composer Stephen Bulla is the adjudicator to determine the champion in the second division. This brand new work (2017) by Stephen Bulla is based on the well-known theme Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott. A spectacular work that commemorates the fact that it has been 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. A few years after Wittenberg, Luther provided text and music to the now famous ‘Ein Feste Burg’. This melody, both complete and in fragments, forms the basis of Frontier Vision. Bulla combines Luther’s hymn with an evangelical movement that spread throughout North America in the 19th century. These pioneering missionaries provide multicultural and energetic rhythmic influences in the work. It was commissioned by the Western Territory Staff Band of the Salvation Army. Bulla graduated magna cum laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1980, he held the position of staff arranger for the Marine Band and the Chamber Orchestra of Washington. In 2015, he was a guest at the NBK where his Beecher Variations was set as a compulsory work for the fourth division.
